Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie
The ”Verein der Freunde der Nationalgallerie” is a non-profit association that supports the work of the German National Gallery with its 6 locations: The Old and New National Galleries, Hamburger Bahnhof, the Friedrichswerder Church, the Berggruen Museum and the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection.
"To provide long-term support to the National Gallery and contribute to its further expansion" is the main role of the association, as set out in its constitution. It has pursued this goal through around 150 acquisitions with a total value of 50 million euros over the last thirty-five years. This includes significant artworks such as "Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue" by Barnett Newman; the "Skat Players" by Otto Dix; and contemporary works by artists such as Thomas Demand, Michel Majerus, Omer Fast and Cyprien Gaillard.
The association has also supported around 100 exhibitions at the National Gallery since 1984. This allowed large projects such as "MoMA in Berlin" (2004), "Die schönsten Franzosen kommen aus New York" (2007) and "Gerhard Richter. Panorama" (2012) to be realised, as well as special projects like "Carsten Höller. Soma" (2010) or "Tomas Saraceno. Cloud Cities" (2011) and last but not least “ImEx” (2015).
